| What I Like About Oregon
I have moved to Oregon and everything is different. Yet, it's the same in any given spot as other places I have seen and visited around the country. I just wanted to share my good impressions of Oregon - as they occur. Here's one thing I really like about Oregon: Right outside of town, on the east, there are several small parks - mostly at different points around Devil's Lake (The "D" Lake) which envelopes around five miles of the eastern Lincoln City border. There is one park that circles another, smaller lake - and has a 2.5 mile trail thru fairly old-growth forest - right there at the edge of town! So we can go hike that for a little while - and then drive about 8 blocks down to the Ocean - and hike that beach for miles - all at the very toe of the mighty Pacific! (Oceans got toes?)

Darn Wyody, was just looking at some Satelite photo's of your area. Devil's Lake looks like most of it is private property with only a few entry points for everybody else. Is that the case of is it just hard to tell from the satelite? Can't say yet W53 - don't know. I've been around it a couple of times - stopped at a couple of places - met some folks with docks - but haven't learned it yet. Focus at the north end of the lake where it crosses 101. As the road follows the south side of the lake, the first bldg is a boat-rental place. I think they open this month. At the south end of the lake ... on the north side - there's regatta-park and it looks like you can put-in there. I'll keep you posted. (psssssst! 53! Hey ... they think it's winter here~!) Look's like a nice quaint little town though Down south about 15 miles is Depoe Bay - whale-watching capital of the world, they say. It is known to some as a "Quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem" .

| Re: What I Like About Oregon We moved from SW Wyoming to Oregon Feb 1. Although we had spent several years in SW Wyoming, we had just returned October of last year - after over a year near Cincinnati Ohio and a month in a little town south of Oklahoma City.

As for me - now that I'm in the perfect vacation-spot, the job offers keep coming in! We had companies trying to hijack us while we were still loading the truck to come here!! Got one this morning - don't even know where it is for sure ... someplace in the state. Oh, didn't want to mention it while you were considering your new position - but they're looking for a cop in this fair town - gotta be Oregon certified ... and there's a casino. Always nice to have at least one long-arm on your side, eh? Besides, I gotta let the last one go pretty-soon. Duct tape's starting to deteriorate.

Congrats. Wyody on your move. I have been on the Oregon coast before...traveling to Washington. Took the coastal route. What a contrast to Wyoming, huh? Well please get out the camera and take some pictures. It has been many years since I've been there and I would love to see some of that coast again. I don't know why...but I thought you were retired. Izzy

Western Oregon is one of the greatest places on Earth. You are close to everything and the scenery is beautiful. The only other place I could live would be on a warm tropical island with lush jungle.

We have a bunch of friends that are from Minnesota. They actually had a Minnesota party last year with weird Minnesota food. They have funny accents. Reminds me of the movie Fargo.

| Re: What I Like About Oregon I've been thinking along the same lines, PDX. We have the lushness of the south, the woods, moss and "spooky-ol'-trees" of the mid-Atlantic and New England states, lakes, rivers, the ocean, cliffs, waterfalls, wildlife. The only thing I'd add is a little more tropical influence as I like to swim natural waters - and that looks a little limited here. However, it's a nice trade to live in a place this nice that still gets a touch of winter and maybe even some snow for Christmas.

George - are you by any chance from the Hibbing area? Knew a George there once - famous/infamous fella in the area. Wrote a whole fugue about him.

| Re: What I Like About Oregon
Another thing I like about Oregon is that people here seem to have a positive regard for their state. Everywhere we go, the people are the friendliest of anyplace I have been. Grocery checkers, waitresses, gas-pumpers, retired folks, wave-heads, Folks in the city, folks in the country. Each one will usually begin with "I really love it here". Oh, I have seen a few complaints in other places online - so I know that not everybody is so satisfied - but I haven't run into anyone here with a real complaint ... except one fellow down in Newport who moved here from Virginia a couple of years ago - he thought the season-changes weren't drastic enough. And another fellow was barking on the sidewalk down in Depoe Bay a couple of weeks ago - irritated about somebody taking a lunch-break while gas prices are so high - one of those fellows that would've been barking no matter which moon was up ... know whut I mean?

I have known many people who complain and some have moved away, but most come back. It seems there are worse places out there..... The biggest complaint is the weather. Sure it rains here, but we get less rain than many eastcoast and southern states get. Our temps are also more moderate, so you can do stuff year round. You just need to have the proper gear. When it is raining in the valley, it is most likely snowing in the mountains, so rain is a good thing if you are a snow sport enthusiast. Another big plus about the rain is it creates are beautiful forests, rivers, and lakes. Without the rain, Western Oregon would not be green. But, when July comes around, you can basically count on not seeing rain until late September. And the summers are not very humid (20-30%). it is a great place to live!!!

Truth is, I was used to running into Oregonians in other parts of the country. Folks who had lived here for long periods and then, moved away. Ever notice how people from some states seem to always be negative - and so one might decide that the place they come from must also be negative? That's how it was with me - I'd run into Oregon folks who had moved elsewhere - and they were generally always bummed out. Thought the whole state must be that way. I was wrong. These are some nice folks - seemingly real as can be. Suppose those I met might have been malcontents in the first place.
