NEWPORT - An Outsider's View

Holy Cow! They have a Bay!!! Cripes it's big!!
Never knew it until today. Oh, I'd seen the marina, driven down to it - somehow, the rest of the Bay remains hidden from view. That sucker is close to 20 miles long! Wide! Runs clear up to Toledo (OR) and beyond. Big fishing and crab boats moored in there. Who knew? Can't see it from Hgwy 20 in Toledo - just drove right on by it before.
Also saw the Ripley Believe-It-Or-Not Museum. Seals and wax museums and Underground gardens. First time in that section - again, never even knew it was there!
Now ... I've got a problem with Newport and I swear, I don't mean to insult anybody or anything there but since coming to Oregon, nearly everybody is friendlier and nicer than anyplace else in the country I've ever been. But Newport? We have to drive down there for our WalMart. It's 25 miles away and I've hated it, despised it, feared it every time because the people are absolutely rude ... ignorantly rude. Here in Lincoln City, we're only rude to the tourists 'cause they ruin our daily lives but 10 miles south is Depoe Bay - people wandering around muttering negativities along the way and then, one comes to Newport and ... and ... let me put it this way (Pay Attention IZZY) - if I want to be among a bunch of foul-minded, idiot rude people then, I'll move to Idaho!! No reason at all to put up with that in Oregon.
However, I've found something good about Newport - and even met a couple of decent people there.
That Bay is gigantic. Now I understand why Toledo is an option. There are few houses along the way - some very old ones tucked into the mini-canyons across the road from the Bay. Some for sale - haven't checked pricing yet.
There is room to sail your yacht, your Hobie, your freaking Sloop or your windsurfer.
Now me? I'm kind of an isolationist - a hermit-type. I don't need a bunch of folks around all the time - and there appears to be room for people like me out along the Bay. I'm okay at work and while stepping out but as far as a place to live, I would never survive a housing development or even a rental in town anymore - and most towns I've seen along the Oregon coast are full of houses of all price ranges all packed together like sardines in a can ... except in Newport, there's this Bay and the roads that line it heading for Toledo. I just may check it out.

Re: NEWPORT - An Outsider's View

The coastline of OR is beautiful and yes the bay in Newport is impressive for such a small place. I can't believe the growth in the past 10 years along that coast line!!!! Starting to look like CA.

Re: NEWPORT - An Outsider's View

Newport Bay is pretty much the only safe harbor from the Straights of Juan de Fuca in Washington to Eureka, CA. Many huge cruising boats stop in there when the weather is rough until it clears. Sometimes it takes weeks.

Never had anyone be rude to me there. Maybe because I am there as a tourist and they just want my money.

Re: NEWPORT - An Outsider's View

I'm glad PDX, that you've been treated well there. I keep hoping I'm just in a bad mood 'cause I'm there shopping ... but keep getting proven right.
Over on another site, I once posted advice in their Idaho forum - which was, before moving to an area, go take a cart and go through their grocery stores and department stores - because from that particular vantage point, one can get a first-hand, close-up view of what the populace is like. In most every part of Idaho I've been - it's a horror story at the store.
And that's how I got my take on Newport.
I suppose I'd better find some way of measuring the "good" side of a town's populace before I turn into a Crabby Appleton. Don't have the same problem farther south or even inches to the north of here - don't really think it's me - but I'm really glad someone said something good about Newport. Almost nobody here does but I can't really spend time asking them why 'cause I'm government and they're not - not supposed to mingle with the humans I know. Go figure.

Re: NEWPORT - An Outsider's View

That is a good way of measuring an area. Go to the grocery store. Or, if you want to see the worst an area has to offer, go to Wally World (Walmart). We NEVER go to Walmart. We have boycotted them. Plus, that place is SCARY!!!! You can never get out!!!
