Moving to Portland Oregon to go to PSU ; Should I live downtown somewhere near a

streetcar line? I am moving from los angeles to portland in a few months, and I am looking for a rental, but have no idea about differetn areas of Portland. Is Brooklyn a good place to look? I would like to rent a house somewhere quiet or has a nice views maybe. I assume that on the west side of the 5 is the downtown and it's crowded and dirty compared to the rest of the metro area.
I need some general advice on where to look for my place to live, given that I will be commuting to PSU and think the streetcar sounds like an awesome thing. Any opinions on the streetcar would be greatly appreciated too!

I would try to move to beaverton or maybe even gresham to save on rent. Downtown apartments are pretty expensive!!

The MAX system is great and is pretty inexpensive!!
