| Allergies in Oregon What affects some people doesn't always affect everybody else and each region seems to have it's own brand of allergens. Last week, I took a trip down to Eugene. It's only 84 miles. I was a stuffed monkey the whole time. Lived on Benadryl. I don't know what it was - blooming things I suppose. I live in "The Valley", near Salem (The Willamette Valley) with thousand-acre sod-farms, Tulip farms, wild growth ... and I'm fine ... so far this year anyway (it's May). Yet, a trip south where the terrain doesn't appear to be so different nearly crippled me. Last year, I spent all year over at the coast - with severe reactions to the invasive but beautiful "Scotch Broom" ... among other things - those probably being blowing salt, sand and dust. So, after several days in Eugene, we made the drive back - it's only about 60 miles to Salem but by the time we reached Salem, I was nearly fine. I'm not sure if this is a question or a report - but I've only noticed any plant allergies the last couple of years. Of course, in Wyoming, there's just not much to be allergic to although I've seen people debilitated by Hay Fever down in Salt Lake - which is a few thousand feet lower in elevation than Wyoming. Anyhow, ah ... ah ... aH ... AH ... CHOOOOO!!

Yes my friend our lives continue to parallel Lived in Eugene from '88 till'93 when my hubby and I graduated from U of O (go ducks!). This was after I graduated from Clack comm college, hats off to PDX. I never suffered from any type of allergy until landing in Lane county. They explained it to me that the small range mts. narrow the valley down so that things do not blow out. In the upper valley where you are, there is more of an affect from the Gorge. I laughed at the locals until after a few months when I was wearing a mask and believe it or not goggles! The cottonwood would literally make my eyes swell so much I looked like Marty Feldman. (Where wolf? There wolf! Young Frankenstein, my favorite movie) Both of my children were on inhalers and meds, it was a real trip. You lived with the windows closed and the ac running. Otherwise its a cool place, lots of track history with the founders of Nike and all. At one time this part of the valley was the Number one grower of grass seed, oh my running nose

| Re: Allergies in Oregon ... and so the thread begins to wobble, unseemingly so, between fuzzy references to "Wot Hump?" and the ghastly spitting out of the words "Frau BlOOka" (neigh-eigh-eigh-eigh) to the wearing of masks 'neath the effervescent presence of the Cottonwood. Well, not that it's any consolation or even relevant ... but I did find out that I still like Martinis (Beefeater, please)! I don't know anything about Nike - all I know is them is the Aholes who made "Stars" passe - which may have ruined America - and I sure don't know what the summer will bring (except heat, gasp) but I should know within a month or two if the problems are large enough to threaten my staying here another year. Hope so - I's got good insurance for once!

Oh for sure you know about the roll in the "hey". I just can never get enough of that movie. Ok one thing that always helped me was some over the counter saline nose spray, generic is just as good or you can make your own. Take showers and try not to be outside in the late afternoon when the wind is moving it around the most. Usually its over by 4th of July. The rose festival time was usually around the peak. Madaline Kahn, with that crazy hair. My dear daughter said today it was 96 in Portland, man you may actually get a summer, enjoy!

| Re: Allergies in Oregon These are our first days over 71 in a couple of years. Wondering ... how does one make their own saline-nasal spray? The relevant kicker is, I dumped out my one shaving kit to choose items for my travel kit ... and neglected to pack the spray I already had. The hotel had benadryl. That's what's really bad about the meetings I attend - I haven't made it 100ft away from the hotel in 8 years - every hour is packed with total, locked-in boredom ... barely time to toss the martinis.

My dear Pediatrician who knew we were on students budgets started me on the saline drops/spray for my poor allergy suffering children. About the same ratio as a salt mouth rinse. A few shakes of the salt shaker to a little warm water, gently sniff into the nostril or pick up a dropper at Rite Aide. You are having some real unusual hot weather, enjoy!
