Moving to Oregon

Just a note to advise that I will be moving to the Oregon coast in just a couple of weeks and hope to be able to help inform folks interested in doing the same. I may be offline a couple of weeks starting in the next few days - but not sure yet about that. If I must break away, I will be back on soon to offer assistance as my schedule will allow both here and on the intermtn sites (WY,UT,ID,etc). Air-conditioned coast - Here I come!!

"They" call it the central coast. Looks northern to me. Lincoln City.
One thing I might mention - and probably need a new tag for this - but in trying to find a subsidized, elderly unit for dear mother-in-law, I've been unable to find anything at all nearby so far - not even an unsubsidized vacancy! Right now, my search has extended all the way to east of Portland and south thru most of Lane county. It is important for elderly and/or disabled folks looking to move to w. Oregon to start their search now and get the applications in to get on waiting lists that are sometimes 20-people long!
Especially if they need ADA or wheelchair-accessible units.

My aunt & uncle used to live in Lincoln City before moving to Florida. I'll drop them an email to see if they are aware of any possibilites that you might not have discovered.

I lived in Yahchats for a short time. Sure was beautiful seeing the ocean outside the front of the house. HOWEVER I sure was tired of my hair being wet! I would get up and showe and my hair would stay damp all day till I went to bed and then it would dry by morning only for me to wash it again!

I used to take my dogs to Ono beach to run each day... I went through there last year and saw that it is no longer a dog park!!! That is so wrong.

The coast is beautiful... but for me a bit too wet.

There are all sorts of subsidies. She is currently thru the regional Housing Authority - which, in Oregon, goes county by county. E-mailed one of them and they e-mailed back offering us a job (we haven't even gotten there yet) but said it'd be a 6 month wait for her. Housing Authorities often use a Hud, section 8 program. She has also been certified previously with RD.
We (wife and I) kinda specialize in and have received much training from RD (United States Department of Agriculture/Rural Development) which you will normally not find in the bigger cities (like Portland) but will often find in smaller towns. Oregon has something we haven't seen before called "HOMES" which I hear is similar to Tax-Credit units.
That's the programs I know of that she will qualify for. There may be others of which, I am not currently aware.

Sorry about the dog-park. I haven't had a dog since my coyote/retriever passed many years ago. We're down to a cat now.
On the Atlantic coast, I never had a problem with the damp except for chips and bread going soft ... fast! The Pacific however, is another story. Even down in San Diego, I loved the beach and tried living right there - but decided it was better to bike or drive down. We'll see how this goes - I don't have enuff hair to worry about it much anymore but my wife has hair down to there. She's basically a desert-born & bred type altho she did live around L.A. for a while (again, on the desert side of the hills) but I'm thinking the awesome power of the Pacific will overcome some of the inherent problems.
Thank you for your input - it helps reduce surprises.

Well, you're right. I have spoken to a couple of folks with Guardian and several other companies. I have a "subsidized" link thru Rural Development that gives me Housing Authority and RD properties and by clicking can see if they're "elderly" or "family".
But the fact that you cared enough to get this link for me tells me loads about you and your involvement. We'd had contact "over-there" but not quite as direct. Nice to see you "over here". Best Wishes to you.

Best wishes to you and safe travels when you head out. Wish I could have been of more help. My mom lives in a subsidized apartment complex here and I know the difficulties of being able to get in.

We managed subsidized in Idaho - family complex though. Often, it's simply a matter of timing. However, I've never seen a state where county after county is bone-dry! I keep finding new links though - and am confident that some string I tug on, somewhere, will open the right curtain. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Yes, timing is a key point. My luck was the place my mom lives at, was still being built. It honestly fell into my lap. It's not typical of me to read the newspaper late in the day. If I miss it at breakfast, then I chuck it. Well, that day I decided to read it and out falls a flyer about the complex and mom was still in CA, but we got her in and she's lived there for nearly four years now.

Keep thinking positive!

Re: Moving to Oregon dealing with coastal mold

Just wonder if any of you folks can give me advance tips on dealing with the problem of mold at the coast. One person mentioned an air-purifier - any other tips?

Re: Moving to Oregon

An extra large blow dryer? Ya know, I've no clue never having lived in a climate as such. However, I'd certainly make sure there's a mold inspection done!!

You're in luck, I'll email Unc and Auntie again to find out for ya

I dry everything off as much as I can. And use bleach. I shower and use squeegie and a small towel to dry off the walls and glass. In the kitchen I wipe everything down with paper towels... I really haven't had much problems with mold.

Mold or mildew? And on what? The only thing we have that molds is old food in the fridge

Mold? Well, just where is it? and who says it is Mold?
It could be indoor moss? We were not too aware of mold
when we moved there, but, in retrospect, one should have
an inspection of a home before buying and in Oregon laws
now, that is a prerequisite to a sale of a residence.
Mold can take the form of dark marks on a wall, usually in
a corner, or where moisture flows. We always used
a 'dryer' called dri-z-ice which captured the moisture and
converted it to water which you emptied. If it is in the
studs of the house, bad luck. Many times they remove
the sheetrock, which has become moldy and put new stuff
up. These dryers can be placed in each closet, and any
corner where you think mold can grow. It is a health
hazard today, and apartment dwellers can be assured that
the landlords know of the law and CANNOT rent a moldy home.

When buying paint at a hardware store, make sure it contains a preventative that will kill the mold as the paint is applied and will also
resist mold growing on the paint.

Uncle Joe.
Well, that's the information I got from my unc, hope it helps.

My other insight, stay out of PDX's fridge!

Re: Moving to Oregon

These are great tips. Native, you may not have the problem in Portland - I didn't have it in Florida either but did have some in Ohio.
I'll have to look into that dri-z-ice unit.
I am a landlord-type and will probably have to deal with the problem more often than some folks. I haven't talked to them about it yet where we're going but I'll have a day to chat with the fellow whose job I am moving into.
I have heard at least one horror-story on the other site but it mostly involves air being allowed to circulate around and in back of everything!
I've had a little training on the matter just because of all the problems Texas had with it a few years back - but need to be smarter than mold (this, I might be able to accomplish).

Sorry, my uncle made a slight error last night and the item they used is called Dry-Z - Air, not "ice".

Oh... you are talking about the toxic molds and other bad mold issues. If it is an older house, no problems, you probably won't see it. But, you may see it in newer houses as they have changed the building codes and they build year round even when it is pouring down rain and many newer houses can get a mold problem. Best thing to do is get a home inspection done, and if you see any mold, spray with bleach and it will kill the spores. A co-worker of mine had a mold problem under his house, so he suited up and got under the house and sprayed straight bleach on everything under his house. He said it sucked big time, but it took care of the problem.

Here is an interesting story and some good links at the top of the page:

Good stuff. we use it on our sailboat. But... in this climate with 100% humidity during the fall, winter, and spring you will need to get a lot of the silicon refill packets!!! They also have electronic ones that you plug in.
