| Sailing in Oregon Don't start sailing!!! It is a life long addiction.... I race on two boats in the Columbia River and cruise on our own 26 foot sailboat. If you are a sailor, or want to try sailing, the Columbia River is a great place for it. There is also sailing on the Willamette river, but mostly small dinghy style boats. Southern Oregon has Klammath Lake, the main spots on the Coast are Astoria and Newport, and Central Oregon has the cascade lakes (beautiful area). | Re: Sailing in Oregon [quote=PDXnative;2356]People go offshore. In fact, many boats go between Portland and the Puget Sound area all the time. The Columbia River Bar is known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific" as it is the most dangerous bar crossing in the World." As luck would have it, I'm watching a travel-channel show on the CRBar right now! How exciting. My sailing was all small-cat stuff on Michigan lakes but I've spent much time on the Atlantic - on a unit that looked just like the SS Minnow (Gilligan) -even took the wheel in the "Triangle" a couple of times - it was all my fault that we went in circles a bit - kept wanting to watch the horizon. Slept on a sloop down at Oceanside CA a couple times but never went asea on it. I'll probably have a few more questions after I get up there and in-place. |

When I was 13 I was stung by a stingray in my calf.. never had anything hurt like that in my life.. my leg swelled up like a balloon. I dont mind pools though.. heh heh. |

| Re: Sailing in Oregon PDX Native; I can feel it - it's coming, it's coming! ... but I don't know when it is. When is it? When is it time to pull the sails out of mothballs and get out on the water with that new sailboat of yours? And where will you go? Same place every time?

| Re: Sailing in Oregon LOL, sails are on the boat. We are moving it tomorrow to our slip, so hope all goes well. As for some river cruising, we need to do a few projects on the boat first, but after that we plan to cruise to some great cruise destinations on the river. Where? I am not sure, yet, but will let you all know.

I have a question; When I was in PDX 3 years ago, I saw down at the river these "houses" that looked like they were floating on the water. I've seen houses on stilts sticking out of water (Atlantic Ocean, Fla) but not whole tract-houses in a neat row as if on piers or internal pontoons. Whazzup wi' dat?

We had some snags on moving the boat, but after some rewiring work on the boat and some other unexpeced things, we had to postpone the move. Hope to move it soon. The river is really flowing strong, though. Kind of sucks this time of year unless you are going downstream.
