Travel in Oregon I-84

Something I'd forgotten about, driving I-84 if you move to Oregon during the winter months: Quite possible you'll need chains or "traction-tires" which I suppose is Oregonian for snow-tires. From nearly the Idaho border heading west, it's snow country. Steep, high-elevation terrain with a couple of mountain passes that require your attention. Same with leaving I-5 onto routes 22/18.
The rental truck packet didn't include this info and neither did my road atlas and my memory did not serve me well. I was lucky as I entered the state between storms in February.

Do you see why I told you NOT to take the back roads in winter and only go over the mountain passes during the day? It can get BRUTAL up there, and off the interstate it only gets worse. You were lucky you did not have any bad weather.

You never know. It could be snow and ice, or sun and warmth.....

Yes, I certainly do see your point now! There was really only a dusting over a couple of the high passes between Ontario and LaGrande, a skiff here and there coming thru the Multnomah Falls area and a couple of patchy wet-spots coming from Salem to Otis and again today travelling from Newport to Philomath/Corvallis but in general, good conditions considering I just left the land of ice-and-snow (WY).
and Hey, Y'all, the walk on the beach this morning was EGG-cellent!

Snow at the coast is a rare event, but it does happen. Wonder how long until you are going through snow withdrawals?

What's the matter, did Cabbage Patch make you suck a little naugahide? hahaha

Been there, done that. Had to buy 16 sets of chains once because they wouldn't let us out of Portland unless we could chain every axle.

Cabbage is not an easy one! Heading west with a fairly-large Pennske towing a car on the hauler - one would want to shift down before beginning the north-slope descent! A couple of hairy-curves splattered with a little white-stuff!
Every time I come to Oregon, I am surprised by the steepness of the terrain and how far above the valleys the mountains rise. Coming from the Rockies, I keep thinking of everywhere else as flat ... until I get there!

A couple of weeks ago while viewing the Lincoln City traffic web-cams, I saw snow on the shoulders of the 101. It will be at least a year before I suffer any withdrawals. The times I've lived in the southern climes, the first year was fine but by the second Christmas without snow, I'd start missing it.
Lucky thing about moving here is - if I want snow, it's just a drive up the hill!!

Now, on with my wet-suit shopping!

Howdy WN and thanks. Nice to know I now live in a place where Spring comes around Springtime ... rather than the Jun 1 start I'd gotten used to in WY.

Okay, color me a huge dork! I could have given you that advise considering how many times we went over there in the truck. I had seen where PDX gave the cautions on not taking back roads and sticking to the passes by day. I'm glad you made it, however I should probably go and stand in the corner.

save for the freak storm, cabbage is fairly good to go from mid-march on as far as snow is concern ... although, ice at night is another matter.
