Just some random shots I took a couple weekends ago on a day trip to Columbia with my brother. It looks like they are doing a good job trying to clean up their downtown area, and their "new" main street is looking nice, but 1 block in either direction is still looking old, run down, and poor. The USC Gamecocks football stadium looked huge, I did not get a picture of it though.

What did you think of Columbia? How far of a drive is it from Charlotte? Where is the nearest beach?

It was interesting and a nice way to spend an afternoon, but I didn't see anything that would make me want to live there.

I think the drive was a little under 1.5 hours from my place in south Charlotte.

The nearest beach is probably somewhere around Charleston which is about a 2 hour drive from Columbia.

yeah, main street isn't really a hot spot. The Vista, which is near the capitol building, is pretty cool. It is several blocks of restaurants and shops that run down Gervais Street. Also, the USC/5 Points area is a good area. It has always been the place for the college age crowd.

You can get to the Grand Strand or Charleston's beaches (Sullivans Iland, Folly Beach, Kiawah Island, Isle of Palms) in roughly 2 hours. It sometimes takes closer to 3 hours in the summertime.
