| Pierre South Dakota
I am curious about Pierre South Dakota. If I were to relocate to South Dakota I would want to be close to water and water sports. I see that Pierre has a river and seems to be a nice small city, but pretty small for a state capitol. Wondering what the deal is for this city? It would seem that being a capitol, on water, there woud be a much larger population. What am I mssing here?

dufferz, Pierre is a pretty nice town but it has some draw backs. You asked how it stayed so small. Well, take a look at your map. It's off the beaten trail. It's quite a ways off the interstate and as such, doesn't get a lot of traffice unless it's dedicated to going to Pierre. Plus, the river is situated so that the winters are pretty harsh, the wind comes whistleing down the river. Summers are fantastic though. Like you say, lots of water sports. Pierre is more of an agricultural town. Not necessarily a bunch of farmers and ranchers but more tuned to outfit the farms and ranches. Most farms around there are very large acre places and need major equipment. I used to travel back and forth between Rapid City and Miller and drove through Pierre. If we were going to encounter bad weather in the winter, it was usually there. |

I know people who want that kind of town but want it to stay that way, so visitors are not welcome. You would think that with this being the state capitol, there would be a long of relocating. Add the river, and it sounds like it should be a good place to a quiet life.

Wouldn't know about housing prices, sorry. Always went through. Maybe spend a night in a motel if I was tired, but never looked into housing. One thing. If you move there. Stay away from the Snake Pit in Ft. Pierre. haha Used to be a bar over in Ft. called the Snake Pit. Confidentially, I'd rather be thrown into a snake pit then be thrown in that place. Was in there a couple times. Was breaking horses just east of Pierre and that's where us Cowboys hung out. Typical old west. Get a bath in the stock tank, get duded up. Drive into the snake pit. Fight, drink, fight some more, go home drunk. No problem. It used to be that the time zone run right down the river that splits Pierre and Ft Pierre. Trouble was, when the bars closed on one side, everybody would drive to the other so they could drink for an hour more. Too many accidents so they moved the time zone about 10 miles out of town so that both sides are in the same time zone. |

I bet the cops used to love when the whole populations of the bars all got in their cars and sauntered over to the other side of the time line. That's great!

dufferz, gotta tell you a story a little outside of the thread. Was working on a ranch down by Wall South Dakota. We were combing the breaks trying to get in everything we could. All of us rode with pistols on our side. This is 1972 or so. We rode with pistols for one reason and one reason only. To shoot our horse. If we were out there and a snake spooked our horse and it through us, if we hung, we'd shoot the horse to keep from being drug to death. Well, we had camped out for about a week and we were dusty, dirty, and starting to get on each others nerves. We come up with the idea of going into Wall and getting a beer. Now, if you know the Cheyenne River, you'd know that you'll get more dirty trying to bath then if you just don't do it. So we rode our horses into Wall. Course, guns still on our hips. As we got into Wall Drug, all the tourists started snapping pictures of us riding in. Wall Drug still has hitching posts, to this day. As we were dismounting, a guy run up to me and asked me if I saw any Indians today and did I shoot them. I just looked at him. I pointed at the 12 guys behind me and I simply said, 5 of those guys are Indians, why don't you ask them if I shot them. |

If you're interested, I posted the MLS link on the South Dakota site - click on other areas, enter Pierre and it'll take you to the "HomeGain" page from which you can view different South Dakota Real Estate sites.

We went through Pierre a few times...on the way back from our Black Hills family vacations. The city is nestled in the middle of huge hills. (or tiny mountains...I was young) I remember eating at a place called "The Stable?". It was very quaint and had a really unique atmosphere. We ordered a wheat crust pizza and to this day, I don't think I've tasted anything quite as good! If my husband were able to relocate through his company to Pierre, I would seriously think about it. The people were extremely friendly and it was such a close-knit community. I like cities like that, after living in a few huge metropolises!

| Re: Pierre South Dakota I haven't been to all parts of either state, but South Dakota is definitely more tourist-oriented...with the Black Hills and various attractions. It's beautiful. North Dakota is a little bland...very open in the east, rolling hills in the west. Vast meadows...I actually thought it was pretty. I'm not a huge fan of trees everywhere, so it was a nice change for me after living in Minnesota.

The people will probably tell you that they are as different as night and day. Some of the best jokes I've ever heard have been either No. Dakotans talking about So. Dakotans or So. Dakotans talkin' about the No. Dakotans. Although I've never lived in either, I've been through both and spent some time. North Dakota is like an extension of Minnesota until you get close to Montana and then, some interesting grasslands and still-standing petrified forests - which are really cool on a moonlit night as many of the petrified trees are white. South Dakota is more like a prarie state - rolling into Wyoming along the path of the Black Hills. Both, especially NoDak, had/have high concentrations of Norwegian and Swedish families. Lawrence Welk came out of the Dakotas - the Polka-belt stretches all across that northern tier of the Dakotas, MN and WI - even into MI.

| Re: Pierre South Dakota Yah, but there ... in the Dakotas ... he's still alive! My wife ran into her Norse/Swedish lines several months ago - traced them back to a wild Friday night in a Viking boat.
