Should I move to Galveston, TX?

I am considering moving to Galveston to go to Texas A&M. Since it is for sometime (at least 3 years to finish school) I am wondering what is it like to live there? My girlfriend will be moving with me and I would just like to know how easy a transition this might be. We live about 45 min. west of Chicago, and are used to an area with plenty to do, opportunities (work wise), and a nice area to live in. I really want to go to school there, but i'm concerned about hurricanes, crime, and stagnant economic conditions. I just would like a really honest opinion about the place and what are some neighborhoods that are good and which are bad. Rent wise we are looking for something in the 900-1200 price range. Also my gf is an HR professional, how hard is it to find work there?
While the answers that i have received have been in good spirit, i don't feel anyone has gone into much detail. Definitely not selling me on this lol... Anyone that lives in or near Galveston that can give me a clear picture of what it is like living there i would really appreciate that... also i hear the job growth is excellent in Houston are there any working business professionals that can give me an idea how it is there? My girlfriend works in downtown Chicago and i would like to get an idea how it is in downtown Houston.

I don't know what it is like to live there, but I know that ever since Hurricane Katrina and Rita, the hurricane evacuations have been increasing, sometimes unnecessary (even though it is better to be safe than sorry). It's nice to be next to the beach, though! Most people who know what a real "ocean" looks like usually talk bad about Galveston, but it's not that bad. It's a good place for running/bike riding/rollerblading also.

If you don't mind heat, humidity, and bugs, Galveston is fine. It is on the Gulf coast, of course, so beaching is a plausible recreation. Get a Galveston newspaper to investigate employment opportunities.

Goto GALVESTON.COM, and talk to the people on that forum, they are locals and can best give you what life is like on the island. It is on my list of places to live, the city is really up and coming and cleaning up nicely.
