Believe it or not, UT is hard to get into. It's because it's a public school and the rates are pretty cheap in comparison to other private schools like UIW, Baylor etc (talking Texas here). The cheaper rates cause an astronomical amount of people to apply to programs and many are turned down. UT is a good school however, so give it a go. Austin is a cool place, but costly to live there. Your 13 yr old should be ok wherever you land.
