How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Ugh, I'm so overwhelmed with trying to pick a place. I think I'm not any closer than I was 6 months ago. Help!

I tolerate heat better than the cold, at least compared to the people I know. I tolerate 87 just fine, but 98 is too hot (I learned that when I went to Arizona last October- paid attention to the thermometer, I did!). Temperatures in between I'm not sure about. When the snow starts melting, I seem ok to go outside here, but do prefer it warmer.

So, how hot is it really, in Texas? Will I survive there? And how cold does it get during the winter? Can I find a place I like that's comfortable in the summer AND the winter? And would it be affordable?

I need a city with at least 10,000 people, preferably less than 50-80,000 so that it's small enough to bike across town, but might be willing to go bigger if I can't get an ideal city in that size. Must have trees. (I made a thread in c-d about trees, if you'd like me to post the link)

I wish I could just find a chart for all of Texas with easy to scan climate data, then I could go, "yes, no, no, no, yes, maybe..." and just go from there.

It can go over 120 degrees F in the summer. I have been outside when the thermometer went from 90 degrees to 125 because the clouds moved!

The outside thermometer reading on my Land Cruiser shows us around 98-102 degrees average lately...... Too hot.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

I guess it really depends on what you'll be doing while in Texas. Obviously, you'll be fine if you stay inside where is air-conditioned, but everyone's tolerance level is different. If you'll be outside a lot, it's not bad unless you're doing strenuous activities in the mid-afternoon heat.

Texas is hot, but by no means unbearable. I'm telling you from a Minnesotan's point of view...if I can handle it, anyone should be able to! Now, Louisiana is a whole 'nother story: HOT, 95% HUMIDITY AND NO BREEZE. That was a bit miserable for me.

I can handle the heat and humidity if there's a breeze. The beauty of the coast always helps, also. Do you miss Gulfport? Hopefully, they'll be getting it back to the way it was pre-Katrina, soon.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

It will never be pre-katrina.. thats the sad part. It is becomeing way commecial there with Casinos and Condos. The poor are being driven further inland to service the rich an pretty people living near the coast. Lot of locals are talking about leaving because the charm that was Gulfport and Biloxi is going byebye.

yeah I do miss it. you fall in love with stuff and dont realize it until its not there to just go see. I used to after work go out to the pier and walk out and sit and listen to the waves and feed the seagulls and be one with my thoughts. midnight walks with the wife were also fun.

Oh edgewater mall is looking good make sure to go check out soon.. and check out the dinos made out of sand.. they are life size. its awesome.

I really miss my job, I loved going to work, the people I was working with were great.. and the pay was awesome for the area. My landlord was great too very understanding. I also miss gulfport downtown, there is an old building I wish I could buy.. and restore. I have dreams of Long Beach and the tree lined drives, and the grass fed highway onramps how long and green they were. the mipmipmip of the frogs, and the weekly thunder storms. I love Thunder storms and they had many there. Oh yeah I miss it. dang it.

Thumbs up So far so good.

I'm in Austin now, have been for the past few months... I'll be getting DSL in a few days, so I won't have to use the library for internetting anymore.

The locals said this has been one of the coolest summers in awhile. According to the newspaper, the hottest it got this whole year was 99 degrees. To sum up- "I can handle being outside in the summer in Austin better than during the winter in Anchorage." Of course, that's just this year... I'll see what happens when the thermostat hits 110 (or higher!) next year...

My daughter, however... she can't stand the heat, she'd rather be out in the snow.

And as far as winters here, it's mid-November now and I've been wearing my jacket far less often than I would be during the summer in Anchorage. Usually a tee-shirt is fine. Mornings and nightime can be brisk, but during the day needing even a light jacket doesn't happen too often.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Let me just urge you to bundle up a little better.
When we moved to Oregon from Wyoming ... it seemed very warm. We didn't bundle up.
Truth is, it was too cool not to. Got earaches, exposed the throat and upper-chest to too much weather. Paid the price.
This winter, we've adjusted to the point where we get cold now and have been protecting ourselves better ... and it seems to be paying off so far.
Keep Austin Weird! Haven't seen you around in a while - good to know you're still out there/in here.
Oh - and remember to put yourself on the member-map. Look up near the top of the page between "Live Feed" and "FAQ".

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

ARGH! It was actually cold today! I did not leave Alaska to feel cold. Had to turn on my heat for the first time, too- it was down to 73 in here (the house tends to be much warmer than the outside). That's fine for outdoors, but not inside. I put it up to 78. Don't know what the temperature is outside, but it was cold- my hooded sweatshirt was not enough. So today, Thanksgiving, Nov. 22, marks the first cold day of the year.

I'll have to get a newspaper tomorrow to find out the temperature; I don't have a thermometer.

October 22 was the first day I really needed a sweater, the first chilly day of the year. Like, I'm not just wearing a sweater out because I'm a wimp, but it's actually chilly out. That day scared the crud outta me, 'cause whenever it gets down to that in Anchorage, it will only get colder. I thought "This is the end of the warm weather, nooooooo! Not so soon after it's done being hot!" But much to my surprise it warmed up again.

So now I'm in the second act of the, "Oh my gosh, nooooo! It got COLD!" drama. I hope it warms up again. In my opinion, if you need a hat, it's too damn cold outside.

And I used to walk to school in Fairbanks when it was 40 below zero...

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Help me out here ... are you calling 73 degrees cold?
That's as warm as it got here this summer (okay, one day hotter).
We're being cold too - but it's frosting at night and stuck around 50 lately in the daytime.
Well, all things being relative, stay warm, lil pilgrim.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

I got a newspaper. Yesterday the high was 52 and the low was 38. Must've been around 40-something when I went out. Just a few days before that it was t-shirt weather.
Quote:

Not exactly... In the house, yes. Outside, no. Also, I'd say it's "too hot" at a lower temperature inside than I would outside. Inside I would say 85 is hot but tolerable, outside I'd say 99 is hot but tolerable, and that 85 is "warm".

Yeah, it is all relative, I suppose. If it warms up to above zero in Fairbanks you see people walking around in shorts and a vest. Heck, last spring I was talking on the phone getting info about Texas and the lady asked me if it was cold there in Anchorage, and with all sincerity and not a moments hesitation I said, "Oh, no, it's nice and warm out. It gets above freezing most days now."

And even then, I still kept my thermostat around 78-80.

I guess... when you want to stay in a place but decide to move strictly because you can't cope with the weather... it's hard when it's not *perfect* where you move to. I like Austin, I really do. I think this move would've been easier if I'd moved in the winter when I would've wanted to get the heck out of Alaska, rather than in the summer when I'm thinking, "Anchorage isn't so bad. I like it here, why would I leave?" It's like that every winter- "I want out!" and then every summer- "I like it here".

And, if I'd move in the winter, instead of thinking, "Oh my gosh, it got cold one day!" even though the rest of the time it's been ok, I'd be thinking, "Wow, I'm so glad I'm here. It's so warm!"

But anyway, the temperature varies a lot more here than it does in Anchorage. I'm not used to that. And in Anchorage, you *know* when it's fall. Here... for the past month or so I couldn't tell if the tree in the yard and a few other trees I've seen were dying or if it was fall. But I look around now... yeah, a lot of trees have all their leaves and are lush and green, but so many trees are almost bare now that it would have to be fall, not just a few dying. It's so subtle, just a few leaves turn/drop off at a time. Fall in Anchorage/Fairbanks is much prettier.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Hi Candy - I hadn't really read your post correctly - and then I heard about the snow. I'd guess it didn't snow in Austin (did it?) so, I asked my question a little prematurely - I swear that's never happened before.
Thanks for answering it for me, anyway.
The only place on this continent where the weather is "perfect" is San Diego - within 5 miles of the ocean. One or two sweaters for that "cooler" week in the winter and an air-conditioner for that "hot" week or two ... and a couple of airline tickets for fire-season.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

No snow here, thank goodness. I heard that there was an ice storm here last year, though.

Ah, California, that place I considered but reluctantly concluded I couldn't afford.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Well, I suppose I should put this over on the California Forum - but since it isn't such great news, this'll do:
I've lived in California. San Diego. Ventura. San Jose. Spent some time here and there. For the most part, haven't lived there since the late 70's but have spent plenty of time up narth, over east and down into the south of California since then.
I saw San Diego go from sleepyville to tension-town in one year.
When Reagan's administration as Governor was over, the middle-class was wiped out. I think it was the first state in the country to lose it's middle-class. I believe it was Reagan's fault. Ya don't notice too many "middle-classers" in America since his reign as President. Either upper-low or lower Hi - or Low, or High.
Anyhow, not the point. The point is, California is light-years ahead of everywhere else in just about every way - which often means bottlenecks and snafus of proportions the rest of the country just hasn't reached yet. There are more of everything in California ... including Bummers!
Now, for those who are already there and have been forever - those who are truly from there, it's not so bad. We the People of America all moved to California in the 60's and 70's and utterly crushed their way of life - now, We the People all whine and moan and hate as Californians are trying to get out, themselves and into our necks-of-the-woods.
It's nowhere to live, Candy. Oh, with money, you can live anywhere and avoid most of the unfortunate sides of places - but for us folks, California isn't even a dream anymore, it's a memory.
So, we look elsewhere.
I'm in Oregon. You're in Texas. 53's in Wyody. Pan's re-adapting to "The Pass". YR's up on a northeastern highway, The Dufferz & Sir Azi are kicking back in Washington. PDX is here in Oregon. Curious is up in the Great North Woods. Music Junkie is south of there. Catfish is down near the Ozarks. T.S. is hoping to catch a big wind and go where it wills. Admin is ... is ... Hey! Where the hell is Admin??? And KimberCuddly is down in The Plywood State as well. Probably left some folks out - but they're all somewhere - as are we all.
Izzy's in California - and wanting to leave - ... well, her husband is, anyway.
We're all everywhere else, waiting on the next great thing.
Smile down there in Austin. I'm smiling up here in Oregon.
It's a good day. Stay warm!

Those spray-cans of Christmas-Frost Window-Dressing can trick your mind a few times. Might help.

Re: How hot IS it in Texas, anyway?

Is it actually sticking? I would think the ground would still be warm down there. It is up here. When it snowed the other day, the streets melted off during the first day. But the grass and dirt are cold enough that they're keeping the snow.

I wouldn't think Texas ground would get that cold.

So what's the update? How's it looking now?
