| The kid that was killed by a bear in Utah.
Did the rest of you hear about the kid who was killed in American Fork, Utah. When a bear pulled him from the tent by his sleeping bag? American Fork is where I spent a summer when I was a teenager. Hard to believe a bear would be that bold with a group of people around. Izzy

| Re: The kid that was killed by a bear in Utah. I heard it - didn't recognize the campground but assumed it was around Timpanogas. I've walked and climbed all of those mountains and canyons - hadn't seen a bear that close - closest was all the way up towards Strawberry Resevoir - which is several miles (30?) to the west and much higher but on the same path. This is the area between Lone Peak and Sundance - which is a fairly public wilderness being close to both Salt Lake and Provo with loops from Park City and Heber ... I'm a bit surprised as well. Reminds me of the days I used to put a gallon can of opened mint-jelly outside my tent to attract the bears at night - so they would wake me to get up and restoke the fire before it went out. Worked almost every time. Not to make light of this tragedy - but I keep telling folks - the Rockies ain't for everybody.

It was an incredibly sad story. In Minnesota, every once in a while we would have a bear going through the garbage or something like that, but this was such a shock. I always thought that the Grizzly bears were more prone to being more aggressive than the Black bears.

Yeah, but a good Grizzly is hard to find. My elder sister spent 17 years with them on Kodiak Island. Utah gets a fair share of drag-offs by cougar as well.

Well it’s like this if something or some one is bigger than you,an has large claws sharp teeth or horns you give them respect the bigger they are the more respect . Wild animals are just that wild , an will do what they do . to me walking around in the woods wear known large game is without a gun , is a accident waiting to happen . |
