Ok with all the Washington Natives here. Has anyone been to the Rain Forest lately? Washington is the home to the only rain forest in North America. Now that is a cool little fact. I like this one as much as the salt. lol

Re: Rain Forest

They tell me the entire NorthWest is a rainforest - and somebody was posting on the Oregon thread the other day about an honest-to-God place called "The Rain Forest" just south of my location a bit. I'm in Oregon by the way - they got trees in Washington?

Whenever I mention that it rains a lot here, everybody comes out of the woodwork saying "Well, you DO live in a rainforest, ya know"!
So, out with it YRNut - what source you been finding?

Re: Rain Forest

Actually it is One and the same. I wasn't aware of this til now. It is referred to as the temperate rainforest's. It stretches from Extreme northern California, Western Oregon and Washington and continues North, through Canada to Sitka in coastal Alaska. But the largest remaining portion of it is found in Olympic National Park. In North west Washington. Sad I was watching Discovery channel and they said the last one in North America, was in Washington. They should have said it's full range. Ya it is in Washington, but it is in the surrounding states as well.

Thank you for the clarification Hampy. I'm still learning the area myself. New Hampshire is similar in nature to much of the Rocky Mountain region - have an old friend named Orlinski from up there - but this Oregon stuff is pretty new turf for me so far as knowledge of it goes. Dang, we saw a squirrel today - had to get the binoculars - sucker's head was as large as a groundhog, body was the size of a small beaver! Ain't never seed no dang squirrel that big. I'm thinking 16-gauge. (the gun, not the wire)

I'll take the Rockies over the Adirondacks any day. Of course I like to hunt too. And well all in all the rockies have much better game animals. My dream hunts are Cougar without dogs and Elk. Some day. LOL

YR, I grew up in the east. The Smokies were my first range, then the Blue Ridge, then the Poconos, then the Adirondacks and others.
I spent nearly 30 years in the Rockies - with time off here and there.
The whole time, YR, I missed the eastern mountains, the eastern trees, the eastern rivers and lakes.
The Rockies are unique indeed. Majestic, Towering, Looming - but lacking in some ways compared to the beautiful and alive east.
I've been in these Cascades some - loved some days in WA when I was up high enough to see the Ocean some 40 miles or more away. I could look at Mt Ranier then walk around the mountain and see Olympia then walk another direction and See St. Helens. They're nice. What the Rockies don't have that all the other mountain ranges seem to have is ... a sensation of "Spooky". I like spooky ... except for the ex, of course. There are some nice forests in the Rockies - but only a very few types of trees. One must always bear in mind that, even in the middle of a tall lodgepole forest or Douglas Fir forest, the region is still "high-desert".
Enjoy what you have. Hope you get to go on that hunt. I almost caught a Bobcat by hand once. Know a fella that did - loaded it into a helicopter and it scratched the bejesus outta the pilot. Man, ain't that a case of shootin' yerself in the foot!

Re: Rain Forest

NO shooting Rocky... Bullwinkle will be lonely!!!!

thanks for the info on the rainforest.. I thought it was only in Oregon. That one forest that we went to in Oregon sure was a rain forest as compared to anything I have seen up here so far. Guess I need to do some more exploring!

Lemme just stray ever-so-slightly from thread topic here. I'm a habitual type - I use the same coffee-cup for years. No other. Not even thruout the day for water or juice. Same coffee-cup. For the past 4 or 5 yrs, I've used a "Bullwinkle" cup. Nuthin' up my sleeve

Well then I hope you will be leaving Rocky alone... You wouldn't want your cut to shatter would you...Think Karma...

While you are habitual... I choose to change my cups/glass when ever the mood strikes.. However.. I do still have the first cup I got when I first got my apt at the age of 16. And yes I do still use it from time to time.

Now back to your regularly scheduled topic: Rainforests in the Pacific Northwest!

Rocky's safe. Haven't eaten squirrel since I left Ohio the first time in '70.
I'm no fan of moose-meat either - so even Bullwinkly is safe ... for now.

There are some weird deer here though. They ain't white-tail, they ain't mule-deer. They don't even hop hardly. Bigger than a big dog but tending to run instead of bound.
In NC, they had what were called "dog-deer". Maybe these are what we have?

Yeah we have some of those here.. I just figured they live among us humans and our pets and don't know they are supposed to leap and bound.. instead of run like a dog...

Cool link. Thanks.
I suppose then that they must be black-tails. As the season changes, perhaps they'll look a little more like the pic (unicorn?) but right now, they're more like a black-saddle german shepherd! Nuttin' like a mulie. The Rockies are covered with Mulies - and an occasional white-tail although some folks swear there aren't any white-tails in the Rockies.
I've seen a lot of marmots and martins ... I'm pretty certain we saw a squirrel - never seen anything else with a squirrel tail - but you've got me lookin' at pics and that head isn't too far off. Had a whitish broad ring around the neck.
You're alright, YR - Thanks again!

Actually that is a pretty good side View. LOL But ya Height and roundness of the mid section. Are a few things that help put a guesstimate on the point size. Not always accurate but pretty close.

Just wanna take a quick sec and explain that out there, y'all go by the total points. In the Rockies, divide by 2. Nothing bigger than an 8-pt far as I know.
Not sure how they do it out here on the west coast.

Am I to understand that our 6 pointer here would be a 3 pointer there? With our 16 point buck being an 8 point buck there? That just seams odd. Thought Boon and Crockett would have done something about that. LOL

In Texas, deer hunting was more like shooting small dogs with antlers tied onto their heads. I'm not kidding. Okay...big dogs with antlers.

Ya my cousin in PA said they are the same there. 60 Lbs is a big deer. LOL Now he comes home to VT to hunt every year. As he put it after shooting 220 lbs or more every year, 60 lbs just don't cut it. He said nice racks but small deer.
