San Juan Islands

We just spent the weekend on Orcas Island in the San Juans. What a WEIRD feel to the place!!!! It is a beautiful area, but the energy there feels "dead". Hard to explain the feel, but it just felt really weird. My wife felt the same way.

BTW, Washington drivers suck!!!!

Re: San Juan Islands

Being new to the Northwest, I'm still having problems locating some things map-wise - like the San Juan Islands - and whatever those islands are across from Seattle like, where Port Orchard is.
So, gotta dash off to the Atlas once again - but thought I'd leave this link behind with cams and pics of the area. Sorry 'bout the weirdness PD - think I know the feeling you mention - had it at that hotel in Boulder CO where they shot The Shining - and I also lived in Utah.

They also fimed the shining here in Oregon at Timberline Lodge.

It wasn't a "creepy" feel, it just felt "empty" or "detached". It did not feel like anything, which was weird, as most places "feel" comfortable, uncomfortable, creepy, etc...... hard to explain, but it was sure weird.

Okay. Didn't know that. Where is Timberline Lodge? Near Government Camp?
You actually make me want to go see the San Juans. They're big, beautiful, snow-capped mountains in southern Colorado. Interesting to see them as islands.

Hwy 26 to Mt Hood, just past Government Camp there is a turn off on the left for Timberline Lodge, go uphill for about 7 miles and there it is. Really nice up there!!!

The interior shots of The Shining were filmed in London while the exterior was filmed at Timberline Lodge.

What is with your obsession with Colorado?

Thanks for the info - and the really neat link. Mrs Ody is a "shining fan".
I have no obsession with Colorado ... except for staying out of it as frequently as possible as I've always thought it had that same "dead" feel that might compare to your take on the San Juan Islands... but the San Juan Mountains are really nice.
