Most of the answers others have posted already have good information: winters are mild but depressing, everyone who lives here loves it, great area for the outdoors, steep competition for apartments. All true. However, the biggest factors for people moving from the East Coast, are the pace of daily life and the somewhat duplicitous politeness. Seattle is not as fast-paced as the East Coast, and for some people it seems to be a crucial difference; a lot of East Coast people get frustrated when Seattle people make small talk rather than hurrying up and just do whatever they're supposed to be doing. And whereas East Coast people are usually frank and up front about things, West Coast people will talk around the point and make an effort to see things from other's point of view. That also seems to drive East Coast people up a wall. Some get used to it, and learn to like the Seattle vibe, others never do. |

Seattle - and the Pacific Northwest for that matter - is awesome. Lots of water, trees, nature. Great culture in the city. Awesome local music scene. Lots of weekend trip options - two hours to Canada, an hour and half East to several skiing areas. Tons of hiking trails. Winters here and MUCH more mild than what you're used to in Boston (I lived there as a kid - remember my Dad's car always BURIED in snow!) Come on out - you won't regret it! PS: the "eww" came from someone in Texas who's into NASCAR. So not exactly someone who's advice you should listen to lol |

I think coming from Boston the prices won't get you too bad...Its great there....so much to do, and though wet the weather is comfortable....not biting winters like you are used too. Jobs are plentiful, rentals are everywhere, but kind of hard to get into sometimes....depending on neighborhood you are often competeing with 20 people for one apartment

I have family in the area, and I like it here for other reasons. I was an undergrad here in the mid-70s, came back in the late 80's - mid 90's (and got married, bought a house, had a kid), and back again in 2000. Do you have a car? Some parts of Seattle can be got into and out of by public transportation much easier than others; some places are more or less impossible to get to without a car. How much that affects you can't be known until you've got that job, of course. |
