I am buying a car in Alberta and am thinking of moving to Seattle for 4 months and

will be living in BC after? these four months. I'm a university student that wants to work in Seattle for the summer months but I'm wondering where I need to get my car registered when I buy it here in Alberta. My mom said I need to own the car in Alberta for at least a month or else I'd need to pay taxes on it when I register it in BC but would owning it in Seattle count towards this time? I've never bought/owned a car before I'm just looking for any info anyone thinks would be helpful. Thanks!

fIrst off, you don't need to register your car in Washington unless you take up residence here for more than 4 months. Students are excluded from that requirement.

When you buy the car if it's from a dealer, you will be registering it when purchased. On a private purchase you will get title and there will be a time frame in which you need to register. I don't know Canada law, but I assume that Alberta will want their piece of the pie because you purchased property there, so you will probably need to register it there. Once in B.C. If you are a student in B.C. you may be able to maintain the Alberta registration and not even worry about it. Check with BC on the net and see what the student exemptions are for registration.
