Re: Earthquakes in WA and OR

Cool site. It really shows how active the Cascades are. Hopefully we don't have the predicted "Big One" in our lifetime.

Well, there's a substantial chance that if the "Big One" happens, it will end our lifetimes....

Heh. I was on the 14th floor of Westlake Center in Seattle when the Nisqually quake in 2001 happened. Cowered under my desk for a little while.

We felt it about 15 miles south of Portland. The World started swaying.

Re: Earthquakes in WA and OR

I have been to the PNW a few times- and have seen what is left of Mt. St. Helens- but also saw both Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier- both are considered 'dormant' cinder cones- what are the odds of these becoming active?

Re: Earthquakes in WA and OR

Not too familiar with your earthquakes, only the major ones in California that I experienced and that was enough for me. Was there damage like there was in the quake of 1971 or the Northridge quake of 1994?

Re: Earthquakes in WA and OR

The Nisqually quake was 6.8, rather like the Northridge quake at 6.7 or 6.8. It had a deeper center (52 km down rather than 17), and its center was not in an urban area (it was out underwater in Puget Sound). Consequently, there were no direct deaths resulting from the Nisqually quake, and the damage was much less.
