| San Juan Islands
The NW area of the puget sound is the strait of juan de fuca. This waterway connects the pacific ocean to the puget sound. In this area you will find the san juan islands. The three main islands are San Juan, Orcas Island, and Lopez island. Other smaller islands include blake, Stuart, cypress (not the greek one), and Guemes. These Islands offer something that is rare in western washington. Very little rain. A convergence zone in the area creates a mild weather pattern, so the terrain on the islands appears to be more like from a warm southern state. Getting on an off any of the Islands requires a ferry trip so this is a big consideration if you are looking at living there, especially on a busy weekend in the summer. Seeing mopeds on the islands is commonplace. The lifestyle is laid back with lots of interesting shops. Whale watching and boating is the most popular sport in the area.
