| Bluebird Capital of the World
I'm a Washington native and I just heard this a few years ago. What city in Washington state is known as the Bluebird capital of the world? We can discuss its liveability once it's identified. It may be somewhere that I may think of moving to someday. --'rocco |

I have no clue about this one. I'm a bit of a birder, but I'm not sure I've seen a bluebird of any variety in WA. Perhaps mountain bluebirds out in the mountains NE of Spokane, but that's it.

<What city in Washington state is known as the Bluebird capital of the world?> According to "Birds of Washington State," by B.H. Bell and G. Kennedy, there are two species of bluebirds, in Washington. These are the Western bluebird, which has a reddish breast, and the Mountain bluebird, which is blue all over (female has a buff breast). Both have a summer range, in the eastern Cascades and Okanogan highlands. However, only the Western bluebird has a summer range, in the lowlands of the Olympic Peninsula and south of Puget Sound. Sorry, I don't know which Washington city claims to be the bluebird capital. Since Washington State has no native Eastern bluebirds, the title might be contested, by those who love the beautiful Eastern species ;-). Wendy |

MyAzi-- Yes! That's true. I remember that came up on this trivia quiz I took a few years ago. Wendy-- Wow. Very good work! I would've suspected that not many would know that the Mountain and Western bluebird are the ones found in Washington. But yeah, when told that this city is the bluebird capital of the WORLD, I was in disbelief because I had never even heard of it. --'rocco |

Have you disclosed the answer to this question? I just looked it up and it's Bickleton, WA in Klickitat County. Anyone ever been there? Not me! Looks like a quaint place to visit though...

woohoo! we have a winner! ![]() But no fair, Wendy, you "looked it up!" I was wondering if anybody knew it off the top of their head. I sure didn't.Yeah, Bickleton is a place that you probably wouldn't pass through if you were going from one major location to another major destination. It's in Klickitat County and relatively close to Yakima or the Tri-cities but, again, you'd probably have to specifically be planning to go there because it's not on any direct route from, say, Yakima to Portland for example. Or even the Tri-cities to Portland; even though it might be the direct route, I'd probably take the interstates for that purpose. We usually associate Klickitat County with Goldendale but again, if you were going to Goldendale from any major destination, you probably wouldn't pass through Bickleton. Has anybody been to Bickleton? If so, what did you think? I may plan a trip there at some point. --'rocco |

Giving credit where credit is due, it was Spokanite, who deserves the award, for finding little Bickleton, WA, bluebird capital of the world :-). Here's some information, about Bickleton. http://bluebirds.bickleton.org/Bluebirds.htm Even if it doesn't have the most bluebirds, it deserves the title, because the ratio of bluebird houses (2500) to human population (91) probably can't be beat, anywhere else. Come to think of it, we live in the bluebird's range. I should build a few birdhouses, this week. Wendy |

Oh! ...we've got 2 Wendys here! Isn't Spokanite, Wendy too? WendyBG, man, you're full details! Interesting stuff! I miss the bluebird family I used to be able to see in my backyard in Redmond. They were just gorgeous. I'm even more interested now in seeing Bickleton. I've gotta make a trip there someday. --'rocco |

Yes, there are 2 of us Wendys on here. Sorry I looked it up but I was curious! I thought it might have been somewhere near Spokane, because I know we get a lot of bluebirds in the spring. I've got bluebird nesting boxes in my yard where they lay their eggs and hatch their little babies. Did you know you have to face the boxes north & east? I think it keeps the sun from hitting them too strongly.
