Grand Coulee Dam

Does anyone else feel that the dam is not played up enough as a tourist attraction? Afterall, it's the largest concrete dam in the nation.

Re: Grand Coulee Dam

I went there many years ago and would love to go back. I want to take the steam engine train to there and stay for a couple of days nearby. Hopefully one of these days I will find the time.

Re: Grand Coulee Dam

The problem is location location location. Hot, dry, nothing to do anywhere around there. But with that said, yes, it should be a great tourist trap instead of a best kept secret

You know it's funny. A lot of states put on commercials advertising their tourist hot spots. They show them in other states but not in their own so you are not aware of them. I've seen commercials from Washington that showed the damn, but never said anything about it. Just kind of talking while pictures are showing in the background but the monilogue never singled it out.

Well, the reality of Washington is that we hire drunks to put together our advertising commercials.

That latest and most stupid (in my opinion) is the new slogan for Seattle: "Metronatural" Yes, Metronatural. They spent $200,000 to have someone throw a dart at random words, and this is what they got.

Prior to that some other winners for our area have been:

Washington state: The "other" Washington
Washington "say WA"

And they wonder why the state is in debt... sigh.

Re: Grand Coulee Dam

Well, there's other things to see in eastern and central WA, but the area as a whole is weak on high-end tourist amenities. And, it's the influence and money from the high-end amenity developers and operators that drives the state tourist ad programs.

For example ... Palouse Falls is a gorgeous sight (it makes Snoqualmie Falls look punky, IMO), but the nearest town is the world-renowned cosmopolitan metropolis of Washtucna ;) which I think has a single ma-&-pa ten-room motel in it. The Potholes area is a glorious migratory bird-watching spot, but (again) there's not much in the way of infrastructure concentration in the nearby towns (Othello, Moses Lake, Royal City). From the top of Steptoe Butte north of Colfax you can see 200 miles, but the nearest town is ... Colfax.
