We are homebodies who enjoy outdoor activities with the family including the dog. We are trying to do an accurate online city comparison but the website is asking for a single zip code within the city. As we are not familiar with the cities, I ask you...

I think Madison is an awesome town and I am moving there for grad school. If you live in town you don't need to drive at all. I am 28 and I have a preschooler as well.

Madison is a pretty open minded place and as far as I can tell the liberal college mentality blends pretty well with the entire community. If being Caucasian, affluent, and professional are how you define yourself, you may want to live in the suburbs. The city is a little more diverse than that and not affluent by any standard, so you may come up short on other yuppies to snob around with. I think it's pretty much good old middle class.

Madison, Wisconsin > Cincinatti, Ohio, especially for your listed interests. Madison has low crime, many outdoor activities, and a great overall quality of life.
