Medical in Wyoming

Now I'm just trying to enform what you will encounter in Wyoming. Let me give you some history.

I'm diabetic.
My legs are weak.
I have cancer but it's only skin cancer. Getting it cut off next week.

I was down town trying to walk to my bank. The curb dipped for handycapped at the corner and I didn't see it. I went down.

Broke a knee cap. Broke an elbow. A finger. And a nose. I was out like a light. When I realized what was going on, I was being moved from an ambulance to the hospital door.

I was treated with the greatest respect. I was exrayed. I was bandaged. Bad road rash. I was checked on every couple of minutes.

I was charged, "$1600" for the wonderful treatment that I got. Wraps, casts, crutches, and helped out to my daughters car.

Their not out to make a million in Sheridan Wyoming. They charge what it's worth.

I respect them.

Course, I cut everything off when I got home and went about my business. haha

Not to disagree with you at all, 53 - but I'm not sure how much of this paints a picture of Wyoming ... except for the part about "I don't need no stinking casts!" which paints a great picture of Wyoming attitudes.
But then again, it gives an indication of what health-care can cost in your area - and also of the fact that they couldn't wait to get you out of their care-center and into your car.
And again, it gives a very quick glimpse into how hard it is to maintain sidewalks and ultimately, highways in the Rocky Mountain/High Desert climate.
And it also (!) touches on the extremely high UV Content of the Sun's rays at Wyoming elevations - which are high both summer and winter (reflection from the snow can cook you in minutes) - so, you have covered a few safety issues as well.
So, I digress - you're right - this is what to expect in Wyoming (Wyody) - a bunch of good-natured ol' mountain goats too tough to keep down even when it's for their own good and a whole mess of sometimes-nagging, sometimes-clucking, well-intention locals all trying to look after you and nurse you around because they know that, once you've been a local for long enough, you've become too onery for you own good!

Re: Medical in Wyoming

Very interesting, Wyoming. I probably would have guessed the cost would be closer to about $5000. The fact that it was not too hefty of a bill and they treated you so well is enough to make a person jump for joy after a full recovery!

Was this a while ago? How are you doing, now?

hahahaha. I walked down to the Sinclar station and got me a coke. It's about 1.3 miles away. Course, I had to walk back. Didn't take my crutches. No, I'm doing fine. Was a little sore by the time I got back but felt better for the walk.

Well, I get chewed out daily by my daughters for not using crutches. But not near as bad as getting chewed out for cutting off the crutch. hahaha

Figure the chewing will go away about as fast as the pain will. Kind of a win-win situation.

The winter of '04/'05, I broke my kneecap right in half. Walked around that way for 3 months before it finally grew back together. Never went to a doctor. I'd slipped on the ice while taking care of my sidewalks and it split perfectly just from force of impact! I feel much better now, though.
Hang in there Engine 53, folks from the real world will never understand Wyomingannites! Had a small bout with skin-cancer myself a year ago ... not that malignant kind but the kind that alters the cells ... Dude, I'm from Wyoming, that's what fingernail-clippers and acne-medicine is all about!
Party on 53 - then, back on your horse!

Hell, I'm doing fine. Only limp a little when I'm tired. haha I'm not sure if it's a simpathy limp or if I really need to. haha

Got some severe weather going on here. That's what the news says. I was just outside watering my lawn cause it doesn't even look like it's going to rain. Severe my butt. News said, 70+ mph winds, damaging hail, brutal lightning. I look out and we're partly cloudy, 70 degrees, wind is 1mph out of the north. woops, better go post that on the weather in Wyo thread.

53 I'm back from camping and working...catching up here. These old bones don't sleep well even on a padded tent trailer bed:) Well glad to hear you're up and around. You must give your daughters gray hairs...you need a few grandkids harrassing you:) I do picture Wyomingannites being just the way you and Wyody talk about them. I do remember lots of space and few people. What is the biggest city in Wyoming?

That would be part of the reason that I'm down here in Florida...no ice. Seriously, you both need to be careful...it almost concerns me that I look to you both for insight and intelligence...?? You know I'm just kidding...I mean, I really do value your opinions.

Re: Medical in Wyoming

Is Cheyenne large compared to say....Sacramento, CA? Or large compared to Boise, ID? Don't know much about Cheyenne. Is it in high desert, or forested area, or open plains?

Cheyenne is about 80,000 people. That would be a small suburb to either Sacramento or Boise.

Kind of rolling hills, very few trees. Windy. Very cold in the winter because they'res nothing to stop the wind. On nice days though, it can be really beautiful place to be. Good hunting and fishing. Mountains are just a few minutes west of town.

Only an hour or so from Denver and suburbs. So if you can't find it in Cheyenne, make a day out of going south.

It's an old town. Lost of western atmosphere. Cheyenne Frontier days is still one of the top 5 rodeo highlights in the nation.

80,000 is the largest city in the state? WOW low pay, or cheap property, or both? Either way with so few people it must be nice.

Yup. We're only slightly over 500,000 total in the state.

Pay is about standard with everywhere else. Domino's you can deliver pizza's for $8 per hour plus tips. Mickey D's will start you out at $7.50+. Methane fields will pay you around $20 per hour to start. Very competitive pay.

Houseing and property right now is a premium but wasn't 5 years ago. Or even 10 years ago. I bought my 1600 sq ft home in 1994. Paid $27,500. At that time the house was 8 years old. 3 bed, 2 bath, open beam cealings.

I really think there's two things that keeps people away. First, the down to earth honesty of the people. If they don't like your dog, they won't humor you, they'll just say, "Don't like your dog." They won't be nasty, just matter of fact. The second thing is the winters. They can be brutal. I've lived in 38 states and never encountered winters like we have here. But like everything else, you get used to it and prepare a little bit and it's no different then anywhere else. People come here with their Colorado coats and they won't hold out the Wyoming wind so they blame the country. Just buy a better coat. haha

Re: Medical in Wyoming

wow here in NH we have about 1.5 million people and 9000 square miles. What a difference. How are the State taxes there? I remember the little petroleum pumps in the middle of no ware there and the land was real Flat in the area I was in when passing through. But the people where strait out honest. Kinda like the older VT people.

Taxes have been in the past, real reasonable. However, last year they went nuts. Not that they are real bad yet but they went up and not everybody went up evenly.

My property tax doubled. A friend of mine had her's go up by 90%. Now, having said that, my taxes are still only $208 a year. Last year they was $104.

We have no state income tax. Sales tax is 6% and some areas add a penny or two for local stuff.

Small correction - Cheyenne has about 55,000 people. When the football stadium at UW is full it is the 3rd largest "city" in WY.

Does this include the AFB? That might be the other 25 to 30 K people.

You are absolutely correct, I had looked at County data instead of City.
