However, we have a 5th wheel up on top that we use for camping. It's only at about 9500 ft. Might be hard to move it next weekend.

See, in Wyoming, out in the Big Horn Mountains, you are allowed to have a camp, either tent or trailer, out in the timber. But you can only have it set up for 2 weeks at a time and then you have to move it, a minimum of 1/2 mile. So a lot of us set up a camp and go up every weekend. Every other weekend, we move it. Do that all summer and then about October 1, set it up where your going to hunt. They don't much pay attention to the 2 week rule once it snows heavy or during hunting season. Season runs from Oct 1- Nov 30 for rifle. The Archery guys are up there from Sept 1 on.

If it comes down that far, I'll get some pictures and post them.
Sounds great, Wyoming. Not too long ago, I saw the show 'Hogan Knows Best' with Hulk Hogan and his family (reality show) and they took a family vacation to Wyoming...very close to Sheridan. I've been through there at least once a long time ago and the show reminded me of how beautiful the area is. If we ever decided to move up north again, Wyoming would be one of my first choices.

It's official. The weatherman said that Sheridan had it's first official FREEZE for the winter. Sept 10. 31 degrees officially at the airport.

Uff da! Even in Minnesota they don't normally get the first freeze until October. The area is gorgeous up there, Wyoming, but I think I'll take the high of 86 for tomorrow.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Well, it's now the 15th. Monday we had a hard freeze, and Friday we had a hard freeze.

today it was 82 for the high and is supposed to get down to about 45 for a low. Winds were terrible today, we had one gust that hit a high of 5 mph. Yeah, Five Mile Per Hour. haha Humidity at 9pm is 51%. Not a cloud in the sky when the sun went down.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Hey Fitty, are you saying it hasn't snowed yet??
Getting a little late - has usually snowed by today (9/16).
It was always a little humorous with the "in-fighting" between Minnersohttans and Wyomingerangs over who had the more extreme conditions. Minnersoder has that "it's gonna be cold for the next 4 months" thing going on.
Wyoming will be just as cold and colder ... with stronger winds ... with ice-melt during the day!! Big difference when you live someplace where it's just "always cold" and then, live someplace where it will hit -60 below but be up to freezing by mid-day! 70 degree average difference between daily highs and lows over most of Wyoming. I don't think Minnersoda can claim that one!
I didn't enjoy southern Idaho - where it just got cold and stayed there at -12 for weeks at a time.
I also personally don't plan on living in Wyoming again ... but I suppose it could happen now that I've got this "heart-thing" almost straightened out - couldn't breathe at that elevation over last winter. If I were to move back - although I love Star Valley in western Wyoming - I believe I would move near Buffalo, perhaps Sheridan. Gad, it's like, a 10 hr drive or more from Sheridan in the NE way down to Evanston in the SW.
Must mention aside, we were out yard-saling yesterday and stopped at one at what I guess is the parsonage for a Baptist Church here in town. They used to handle one of the Baptist Churches in Evanston (WY). Thought it a tad interesting.

Odie, We had snow up top. Well, actually it got down to the 6000 ft level. So it was white just a few miles from my house.

I remember building Decker Coal. We hit a day that we couldn't keep our jet heaters going. The fuel kept jelling. So we shut down. It was -58 and no wind.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Ha. I remember several days when the propane heater in my computer-module (doghouse) stopped working due to the cold - that's when we went to the electric jet-heater and ran it off my 12V generator. Also, a good reason many appliances are Butane in the area - butane doesn't freeze at those temps. Smells weird though after years of NG or propane. Glad you got your snow. Don't know if Evanston got any - it sits about 1000 ft higher at 6800. Check the Snow-Blower, sharpen the shovels and ice-pics, check your sorrels for holes, get out the bear-grease, don't forget the gaiters!!

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Remember I bought that new 4 wheeler. Well, I bought a 54 inch blade for it at the same time. Trouble is, they don't order blades until all at once for the year. I stopped down a couple weeks ago and asked if the blade was in yet. he said, No, we don't order blades until 1 sept and they usually come in around the 28th. I said, "What the hell were you thinking!"

They should have ordered them the 1st of June if it's going to take a whole month to come in.

We had an oil heater on the farm. That sucked. It would jell. My folks, down in the black hills had an oil furnace. They had two tanks. 1000 gallon, and a 300 gallon. The house was build with the drive in garage in the basement. So the garage was heated. Dad mounted the 300 gallon tank, in the garage. When it got really cold, he'd switch to the tank in the house. haha It was good for about 3 months.

I have three heat sources in my house. Natural gas from the city. Propane and I have two 100 lb tanks for it. And of course, the good old fire place.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Okay Fitty - let me just jump in here with "CoonDog's Weather Forecast for Wyody" ... based on Wyoming tradition and the "luck of the draw":

Blades come in the 28th? First, they'll be a week late.
Second - it may or may not snow between now and then. What it will do for sure is to drop freezing sleet all over the ground - which will begin to melt in the sun and then re-freeze into a cleaner, smoother ice-form ... the kind that will make it impossible to use your blade on when it comes in ... without chipping either the blade or the pavement ... thus leading to a regular winter repair job (the blade) and also to the first item on the "Spring To-Do List" - which will be to break your back patching the hole you put in the pavement with the blade this month.
Doesn't that sound normal for Wyoming? Of course, I hope you fare better - after all, some years go mild after the first snow 'til either Halloween day or even Dec. 26th! Now, the 'waiting til Dec 26th' part doesn't sound so bad on the surface ... but what happens without the snow is, the blasting, deadly cold sets in and there's no snow on the ground reaching upward beyond the exposed foundation and point where walls meet floor - thus keeping the house colder and costing more fuel to heat so, six of one, half-dozen of the other.
Good luck wi' 'dat!

That about sums it up. I remember taking the kids trick or treating one year. It was a blizzard. So I drove down the street. I'd stop in front of the driveway. It was snowing and blowing so bad we couldn't see the house. But the kids would jump out and run into the white. About a minute later, here they'd come back in the truck. Spent about 3 hours doing that.

Now it's fun to tell the grand kids what we went through making their dad or mom happy. Kind of goads the parents into taking better care of my grandkids.

Another hard freeze this morning. Even though I'm covering the garden, I think it's about done.

High today is supposed to hit 66. Wind is out of nowhere at 0 mph.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Sorry, been a little remiss in letting people know about weather.

Today was in the 70's, partly cloudy. But tonight the humidity is way up. Right now, it's 79%. That's the highest I've seen it in a long time.

Forecast for tonight is chance of rain, turning to snow, 60% chance. Low tonight is supposed to be 34 degrees.

Forecast for tomorrow is that the temp will get up to around 50. Still a 60% chance of moisture.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Our last coupla weeks have been down around 40 at night with mid-50's or so daytime. Looks like you're getting our used weather over there.
These first few months of winter were always hardest for me - the little secrets I learn every winter don't usually get recalled 'til about New Years.
So, did it snow?

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

We were supposed to get hit with a double wammy. A cold front moving in, followed by a front with lots of moisture.

The cold front got here. Was 32 when I got up at 5. but the moisture front kind of stalled out for a bit. It's now starting to get really dark and looks like rain, but the temp is up to about 45 so it'll be rain instead of white.

Man, I so wanted to try out the new snow blade on the front of the 4 wheeler.

Oh, the Big Horns are white this morning. But didn't make it to town.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

We've had a week or so of fairly nice weather. Temps in the 60's, calm winds. Been getting down to low 30's or upper 20's at night.

However, the weatherman is telling us the weather is going to turn late this afternoon and tonight. We're supposed to drop in temp and have winds to 50+ mph with gusts up to 60-65. Also supposed to get some rain turning to snow. We'll see.

Are you ready for it. All the wood stacked and the supplies stocked up. Do you have to do anything special for your car in the winter because of the snow/wind/ice.

I can remember bringing our car from CA many years ago...to Wyoming...the oil was to thin and we had water in the windshield wipers. Touched the car door with my bare hand and it stuff:)

COLD COLD wind...that I do remember.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

Truck is always ready. The only thing I had to do to prepare it for winter is to throw my duffle in the back seat. Duffle has insulated bibs, parka, 2 blankets, candles, extra gloves, extra socks. it's my emergency duffle should I get stuck in the snow. But I really don't think I'll get stuck anywhere.

Here's the way the wood pile looked at the end of today. Tomorrow it's going to look much different for two reasons. One, the pile standing up will be split and stacked. Two, I'm having another load of wood dropped off tomorrow afternoon. I figure about 6 more loads should do it.

Re: Weather data for Wyoming

That's a lot of wood. What kind of wood do you burn? We burn Oak. There is also a lot of walnut around here...but it burns to fast. We usually go through a cord or two of wood. It run last year about $$300 - $400 a cord for Oak. The duffle sounds like a great idea. I need to make one up for us. The kids have used up a lot of the bandages just playing around. So I will refill the f irst aid kit, throw some blankets in back and pack extra clothes...also put some bottle water back there. Our new car has the star system on it. We don't have the service but the emergency button is suppose to work anyway. We don't get harsh weather like you do but a person can hit ice and we get flooding on our surrounding HWYs.

First, in answer to your last post, "Cold Cold wind" couldn't have been here. Maybe elsewhere in Wyoming, but not Sheridan. We get wind, but not very often at all.

The wood you see in the picture is Douglas Fir. It runs about $0.00 per cord unless you get two and then it's $0.00. haha. Oak and other hard woods are pretty hard to come by around here. You can get it, but your looking at $600-$700 per cord.

So I stick with the free stuff. Burns quicker, burns dirty so I have to clean the chimney every year but free is free.

Also, I would imagine your burning Oak for nostalgic take the chill off drink a glass of wine fire? I'm burning wood as my only heat source. Well, not my only, but I have the furnace turned way down and I'm burning the fireplace only. So far, furnace has only kicked on once this year and only run for about 2 minutes.

So I need lots more wood for winter.

Well the price is right:) We came into Wyoming through Utah. Stayed along a river out in the middle of no where. Nothing to block the wind.
