You didn't mention when you went through and saw them. But during the "Oil Crunch/Gas Crunch" of 1972, we capped over 70% of the wells. So there's a lot less grasshoppers around. We call them that because that's what they look like. haha But yes, even with 70% capped, you still see them everywhere. More so in the central to eastern end of the state. Gillette area, Casper, Douglas, they are still pretty thick. Now, the 70% that we capped are going to produce. When one runs dry, they simply move the rig to a capped well. Something about oil, it doesn't spoil. It'll be there when we need it. :-) Did you know the largest "Military" oil reserve is down by Midwest Wyoming? Very very large oil field down there. When I was working construction, we would see somebody drilling a oil well. On the other side of the fence (Obviously a different owner) you'd see them set up a rig. Then if you broke out your transit, you'd notice that the second guy had his rig tilted 1 degree. Think he was drilling under the fence? :-)
