Fishing in Wyoming

I for one love to fish. I started this thread so that we can all put in your two cents worth on favorite places to fish, what do you catch there, what do you use? Give directions.

Course, we all have our favorite fishing hole that we don't want share. But give us some experiences that you've had there.

I for one, have a life time hunting and fishing license. So I go as often as I can.

I'd have to say that my favorite place is Lake Desmit. It's about 6 or 7 miles North of Buffalo on I-90. Excellent trout fishing just from the shore. Even better if you have a boat. They have a motel right there, a camp ground, and a marina with docs. Bring your beer from elsewhere though. haha

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Dangerous time of the year out on the lakes. The ice is melting and in places it's getting thin. I haven't been down to the lake lately but I hope the ice shacks are gone.

This is also the time that I'm getting ready to head out and start fishing from the bank. Almost every year I get overly excited and go too early. I get all set up, bate my hook, cast out over the water and my weight, hook, and bait, bounce along the top of the ice that's just an inch under the surface of the water. haha

Can't wait to grab my grandson and head out to the lake. He's in school this year so I'm limited to weekends. That is, until summer vacation.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

I was about to ask you, Sheridan, which style of fishing you preferred - but lumbered over to read your Lake Desmit post. From that, I sense you might prefer bait/lure fishing as compared to fly-fishing?
Do you do both stream and lake fishing?
In your area - what sort of pan-fish do you have ... like crappies, bluegill, etc.

I do a little of each. Bait/lure, and I also fly fish. Nothing better then getting some brookies out of the streams up on top.

Believe it or not, and they're hard to find around here, but there's nothing better then a big old bunch of bullhead. I'll travel down to South Dakota just to catch 50-100 pan sized bullhead.

The bullhead sound pretty good. Always did like catching prehistoric fish and toasting them up for lunch.
Fishing around Sheridan, are there other lakes and/or rivers where I can go to catch something different? Any bass lakes? Wall-Eye?

Desmet has good fishing. A lot of people around here say it doesn't, but I catch my limit just about every time I go out there and I catch it withing 45 minutes to an hour. I do it standing on the bank. Trout are easy to catch there.

Tongue River Res is just north of town about 18 miles or so. excellent marina and camping areas. Fishing is a little more deversified then Desmet. Bigger choice of what you want to catch. However, it's in Montana and requires another fishing license.

Tongue River is excellent for fishing steelheads. Bit more of a challenge to get up where it's rough.

Goose creek has a few fish, but so much of it is private property it's difficult to get in and fish the good spots.

The lakes up on top are outstanding.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

That's it, it's a date. Grandson cornered me and asked me when we're going fishing. I asked him "Lake Desmett? or up on top." He looked at all the snow still on top of the mountains and he said, "The lake would be nice."

So now I have to get the poles out and make sure everything is in order. All he has to do is wait til grandpa is ready.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Heard they're biting on fly's. Went shopping at Wally World today for some paint and stuff. Happened to wander through the sporting goods. Didn't find anything I wanted. got up to the paint department and noticed there was a new fly rod in my cart. So I took it back and put it back on the rack. Went up to lawn and garden and picked up a new sprinkler and when I went to put it in the cart, there's that darn fly rod again. Went all the way back to sporting goods and put it back on the rack. Then I went all the way across to the food section and got some diet coke and when I went to put it in the cart, you guessed it, Darn fly rod was in there. Had to go all the way back across and put the rod back on the rack. Then I went and looked at DVD's and picked a couple old westerns. There it was, fly rod was back in the cart. Can't figure it out.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

They can't seem to find the pictures that were taken down so if anybody wants to bring more down, they'll be happy to post them somewhere, but not where they were because that spot is taken now.

Of course I had to buy it. Darn thing wouldn't get out of my basket and I didn't want to get arrested.

Did you say "It's a sign?, or Here's your sign?"

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

The Browns are running on the Little Horn. Gotta get up there.

That's where we were last year when my 6 year old grandson and I found ourselves being stalked by a mountain lion. This year I'm not letting him wear carharts. Brown top, brown pants. This year he's going to wear something that doesn't look like a deer.

And, I'll be taking my son who's now home from Iraq.

A few years back, I had a cat jump down from a branch, fully intent on getting me. I flapped my arms, yelled, it turned off and scurried away.

But yes, just in case, I carry a S&W 500. figure that should put one in the hurt locker.

Good time to mention that Carharts ain't meant for running in - 'course, you'd already know that. Dang good item - for standing still.
How big those browns get there?
If you see Gordy &/or Gator out there on the streams, let me know.
Hey 53, I realize I've never asked you about Gordy or Gator. You should probably know them. A pair of old mountain-goats like us. Gordy works the sheep-camps a lot ... don't know what Gator is up to any more. They're in your "hood" - and more seriously hermitted-up than you.
Peace

I've run into guys out there that looked like they were there and then somebody built the mountain. But I haven't talked to them.

This year, the browns are getting up to about a foot to 14 inches long. Good frypan fish. They say up Lick crick, they're a little bigger. Good spit fish.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Still waiting for the "After" report. What's wrong? Git on up there!!
I had a hatchery job for a little while. All the ones that got too big to fit thru the tube were mine.
Golden Trout. Brown Trout. Brook Trout. Rainbow Trout. Cut-Throat Trout.
Unfortunately, I was raised in the "back-over-east". Like fish. Not a fan of trout - but certainly had my fill a few times.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

haha Haven't been up there yet. Last week, my daughter and son-in-law bought a place with enough acerage to run their two horses. So the whole labor day weekend was spent moving their stuff out.

If you ever wanted to see how realistate is doing in Sheridan. They signed the final papers on the place on Monday of last week. Everything cleared on Wednesday. So they put their current house on the market. It sold and was under contract on Thursday. they didn't want to put it up for sale too soon, or until they knew they had the new place. Their old place was on the market, less then 24 hours.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Would I be safe in assuming then, that the oil/gas fields are still hopping busy?
Or is it the people escaping everywhere else?
I would personally be interested in 1/3 acre at the back of their property.
Or, how's this? How about a small but private wide-lot with lake frontage?
Got anything up there like that? Not Resevoir frontage - lake-frontage!

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Remember Desmet? Well, there was an article that come out in the paper saying they were thinking about busting up some land for lots along the lake. I called immediately. I was too late. The lots are not even divided up yet. They haven't figured out how big they're going to be. But they are already on contract, no matter how they bust them up.

Course, you know the story up on top. Getting land is like growing an extra arm.

Re: Fishing in Wyoming

Fishing has been real strange this year. We had a very late spring. Temps stayed in the 50's until the third week of June. As such, the lake fishing was terrible. Water was still cold, snow run off was murking up the water. Not until the first week of July did the trout start biting. Now lake fishing is really good.

The mountain streams have been pretty good all along.
